I love seeing exterior window cases that adhere to classical designs. I’m sure most American readers are familiar with the general layout of traditional window casings, so I’m excited to also share some window casing designs from Russian-speaking parts of the world. I’m not sure exactly how it’s pronounced, but in English an ornamental window casing is called a “nalichnik” (nalichniki for plural). The architectural language here includes what I would call an extreme emphasis on window casing ornamentation. Take a look at these things! (Nalichniki.com has the definitive collection of Russian window casing examples. @nalichniki is also on insta.)
I sense that most American window casings are blank canvasses, and I think it’d be so interesting to see people use these as an opportunity to make their windows and home unique while still reinforcing a building’s other historic features. I’m sure I’ll write more on this topic in the future!
